Cityworm.com grew out of "Composting in Manhattan," my initial plunge into retirement life. At the beginning it was a 10-minute performance in cafes. Who knew that bringing tiny, red wiggler worms into my apartment would become an art form? It did. Compost took over my life. Gave it to street trees in New York City, invented the world's smallest kitchen composter, Worm-Ware©, an adorable little portable recycler. And I went on to make beads, buttons, masks from compost. By 2001, five years later, the work had grown into a 3-weekend installation at Queens Botanical Garden, near where I live in Manhattan. Over 800 women, men, and children visited "This Dirt Museum: the Ladies' Room" to learn how to solve the world's garbage problem through a simple daily practice. This site shows you how to compost-even how to knit a red wiggler out of yarn. People all over the world have done it. Creativity in the 3rd Age is what all my work is about. How will we move on in our lives as retirement changes our daily rhythm? Perhaps you started knitting again as I did. Or, became intrigued with spinning wool. Ron, my husband, recently discovered this very meditative craft. Creativity is also something else-not only art or craft. It is the way many of us in the 3rd age (a French notion about active retirement) find new and different ways to walk in the world.
